why would she be? Sharon is alive so Jenny means nothing to Gibbs if he met her at all. Don't remember seeing him working for NCIS. It all started with Sharon and Kelly's death, since that never happened everything else is changed. And it was Gibbs who made sure Kate worked for him. Tony would have gone to NCIS without Gibbs.

She worked with him on agent level I wasn't talking about the Jibbs angle at all, but I would have thought she had quite a bit of impact in his life

But not if he never met her, you know? Everyone has a different past in the AU. Gibbs maybe never met Jenny

CID intell did a profile on you for me. I know you flaunt authority, especially in front of a female. … She also wrote you were a sniper, a good one, but your eyesight’s shot. You’re injury prone, if not in a state of near death-wish fulfillment. And though you’re pressured and impatient, you’re also passionate and loyal, in spite of the fact that you don’t trust anyone.

Well although I liked this episode and it wasn't as horrible as I though it would be, I will give it a generous C grade. And I wouldn't be surprised if the writers of this episode admit they are fans Stargate SG 1 because this episode is a complete rip off of the sg1 episode where Daniel Jackson re descends for a second time to become mortal again. It takes place in a coffee shop you have good and evil characters walking in and out of the coffee shop and instead of Daniel Jackson and Oma Desala , you got Gibbs's in flux and Mike Franks as the ascended being LOL. A lot of now tired "Forest Gump" style video tricks where used for the Kate and Jenny appearances and a few others and for all the hype this really wasn't a stellar effort on the part of the writers or producers of NCIS and was another very clique way to tell this story. :-[. There been a really decline quality of writing and production of NCIS starting with last season and continuing in to this season. Sadly this is timing wise Ncis's decline is mirroring what happened to another great classic tv show the original Hawaii Five 0. Any Five-0 episode past season 8 was a real crap shoot and seasons 10 -12 were mostly god awful bad and mostly unwatchable. Maybe there needs to be a shake up some new producers and writers ? Because this brand of plot plagiarism is really sad. And for me turn this into 200 episode to forget.

Overall, if you just take the look of it, this episode seems weird or disjointed or somehow very cut and dry, and yeah, there was a lot of hype and it's not the OMG amazing kind of reaction, I wasn't all shockingly impressed but when I actually sat down and thought about it, I actually enjoyed seeing the what-ifs and all the different moments, and in the end, this episode served its main purpose - to give Gibbs the peace to move on and stop second-guessing himself and also to understand good people having to make difficult decisions.

It has been far too long that Gibbs has carried these demons and are constantly haunted by his decisions, not to mention his stubborn sense of right and wrong - and it's not to say he won't be now - but there's nothing like a near life and death situation to put things into perspective and realize that all those times he spent feeling guilty or letting his doubts win over or being stubborn, he was lucky to have what he got and things could have been far different.

Over the years, a lot of things has happened and a lot of lives have been lost - Gibbs hasn't always dealt with it, instead he's buried it, and in moments, you see him blame himself for everything that's happened and always hoping that he should have done this or that to change things but this episode is sort of his wake-up call, to stop wallowing in the past and wondering about what went wrong and instead focus on the people he's helped and the lives that are still living. Gibbs has been living in the past for too long, this is to set him sailing in the right direction again with more pep in his step to know that he's got his team, that his decisions however they might have turned out, was eventually a good decision.

This episode is really about Gibbs' guilt in the end - a lot of the things he's carried inside and never said - it's having his doubts finally confronted and for him to see that maybe some of the things that happened was terrible and hard, but good things, happy things, did come out of it. He lost Shannon and Kelly, and those wounds doesn't heal, but that brought him to NCIS, it brought him to Franks, and it brought him to his Gibblets. If Kate hadn't have died, there'd never be Ziva, but then this team that he's taught and watched grow up wouldn't have existed either.

It's not always perfect and you can't always get what you want, life is about compromises and this is Gibbs' turn to learn that, to really realize that maybe some of the things he wished he still had would have been there, but the things that he carries with him now and enjoys now wouldn't be. And he has to come to terms with letting go of the past and embracing the future, embracing this team and this family that he's lucky to have.

I might be the only one feeling this way but Gibbs seems to have for a while lost the spring in his step - like he's just a robot going through the motions, trying to hold onto some relic of the past - but I feel like this episode is catharsis, not just for Gibbs but for the show and for the audience, it's a chance to open and embrace a new chapter - to realize that some things in the past may not have turned out the way we wished, but ultimately, it led to the things that we love now and enjoy and we shouldn't waste life trying to grab something out of reach when there is something beautiful right in front of our eyes.

A lot of things happened that led this team to the way it is now - but if none of those things had happened, this team wouldn't be the way it is.

There's not much action in this episode, but I think the heart of the story is in the thinking, and in the realization for Gibbs that he's never confronted a lot of those feelings inside of him and it was time to do it because you never know when life can end and you shouldn't just let life go by.

The more I think about it, the more I enjoy this episode. It's unconventional, it's not the usual case-way, but I think ultimately, it is something that Gibbs severely needed after the 9 years of carrying that weight and guilt and finally being able to let it go and realize that he may not have always made the right decisions and things didn't always turn out perfectly, but the life he has now, he wouldn't and shouldn't trade it for the world. He needed to know that and I'm not sure he knew that before with the same kind of convection as he does now.

By the way, great to see the old faces, but did anyone actually see Agent Chris Pacci? Because actor Tim Kelleher was credited in the guest role and I totally did not see him and I was trying to look for him - especially considering that Pacci's death was something that Gibbs never really recovered from and always felt guilty about...

Anyways, that was long-winded but I found this to be a very thoughtful episode - and the what-ifs moments I realize that some aren't seemingly very logical, but this is happening in Gibbs' head, and I think his feelings and his guilt influenced a lot of how those what-ifs ended up turning out in his head, and when I think about it, from Gibbs' POV, those actually made a lot of sense.

Could it episode have been better? Yeah it could, if there was more time to develop the plot than just one-hour, it would be really amazing to analyze all those life-changing moments, but for an one-hour episode, I thought it was rather thought-provoking. It's a rather introspective episode and I think it's a hit or a miss kind of episode with the fans. You either did enjoy it or you probably didn't.

I found it to be a pretty great 200th episode and a nice little rebirth kind of moment for Gibbs to get the fire back in his eyes again, it's nice to see it back indeed. :)

As for the aging of the show, I think it is a show working still in its good years and I don't find it to be a decline, I've actually enjoyed quite a lot of the episodes this season than I did even in the show's early years. But to each his/her own.

And the whole Stargate comparison, I hardly think it's a rip-off from Stargate - just because there's similar scenes doesn't mean it's a rip-off and frankly, I've seen this kind of storyline tactics done way before Stargate even existed so it's not like this is copyrighted to Stargate alone. It's a story tactic that many shows use and I like it here for NCIS, they used it well.

Bullet points! And I've got some mighty unpopular opinions. This may well be the last time I post on Special Ops :o

  • First of all, let's start with how utterly hilarious it was the way they Airwolfed Kate. Did they think we wouldn't notice? I noticed. 8-) Meanwhile they got Rudolph Martin and Lauren Holly back and did nothing with them.
  • The diner conceit was inconsistent. Was it supposed to be only dead people (Gibbs' mom, Franks, Kate, Ari, Jenny, Shannon and some child who may or may not be Kelly)? Then what were McGee and Palmer doing there? Way to be inconsistent with your own plot device, writers.
  • The menu at the diner was hilarious.
  • Why on earth would Kate name her and Tony's baby after her ex-boss' dead daughter that they never met? Was there no other female they wanted to honor (Tony's dead mother, for instance)?
  • They can't have Muse Watson and That Guy Who I Always Think Is Muse Watson in the same episode. It's just too confusing.
  • Someone should have told Michael Rose about FAFSA. Somehow Mr Celestial and I managed to put ourselves through college with little or no support from our parents and neither one of us had to sell state secrets to the Chinese.
  • Seriously, though, the dad's whole speech where he was justifying what he did really frosted my taters. I will be sure and let Mr Celestial know that since he is unemployed (he's been laid off three times in four years, stupid economy) he is of no use to anybody. Because everyone knows that what holds a family together is money and not love or anything like that. >:(
  • And oh look, Saint Gibbs continues to be justified in his killing of Hernandez! Because if a tragic event happens in your life, you have two options. 1. You can hunt down and murder the person responsible. 2. You can become a bitter, alcoholic recluse. Make sure you write it down, people, there are absolutely no other options.
  • Why isn't Tony at Gibbs' intervention? I wish he was there.
  • (Unpopular Opinion Alert) I don't find it endearing, I find it creepy and patriarchal that Gibbs refers to Shannon as (one of) "my girls." She is neither your property nor a child. (Really Unpopular Opinion Alert) I've always felt a little sorry for Shannon. With Gibbs' misogynistic tendencies, being married to him can't have been a walk in the park.
  • "It's your decision, Gibbs." (to let Doesn't-Look-Seventeen's dad get off scot free) Were this any other other show, I'd say no, it's NOT his decision. But this is NCIS, where Gibbs is judge, jury, and executioner.
  • Now we know why Gibbs is always the last one to show up for work.
  • They weren't even consistent with their own internal logic. Like, if Gibbs hadn't killed Hernandez, he wouldn't have joined NCIS, which means that he would have been killed in the Marines, except that Shannon and Kelly were already dead, and if you ask me the writers stopped caring about being 'logical' a long time ago.
  • The conversation with Mama Gibbs was bizarre. "A man that age shouldn't be changing his wife's sheets every day." What the heck does that even mean? Was she a bedwetter? ::)
  • So, Mama Gibbs was a redhead. Let's discuss the Oedipal ramifications of this revelation, shall we? He hasn't been dating/marrying redheads for the last twenty years because they remind him of Shannon. He has been dating/marrying redheads his entire life because they remind him of his mother. And I just threw up inside my mouth a little.
  • Ooh, is McGee going to take the transfer to Japan? [/fake suspense] You know, just once on TV I'd like to see someone be offered a life-changing promotion and take it. Here in the Real World, opportunities don't just fall into your lap, you actually have to pursue them. And if you apply for/interview for a promotion, are offered it, then decide you don't feel like taking it because Change Is Bad, that is total career death. But it's so incredibly cliched it probably has its own page on TV Tropes.
  • And to end on a positive note, Jimmy Palmer's Abs. ;D

My reaction falls somewhere between Belinda's and celestial's.
I did like the show - thought it was meant to be more thought provoking than action packed, but as celestial pointed out, there were inconsistencies. I won't go into them since she did such a stellar job.

One point you brought up, c, was Mom's reference about Dad changing the bed sheets. I don't remember ever hearing about how Gibbs' mom died, but from this statement I get the impression she was ill. Cancer, maybe. Something that confined her to bed and made her to weak to do anything for herself. Her statement about leaving was the best thing she'd done seemed to me a euphemism for dying.
From this episode I get the idea that Gibbs and his dad are a LOT alike. I can imagine Gibbs, had he and Shannon been in this situation, refusing to hire a nurse/aide and doing all the care on his own. Sounds like that's what his dad did for Anne.

As far as naming K/T's baby Kelly ... I was actually expecting Shannon.
