Nobody is getting rid of Gibbs and Tony. Real-life federal agencies are evolving into a mixture of traditional, "street cop" types of agents and more modern, "computer geek" types of agents. You need both to make the agency function effectively.
The show wouldn't work if everyone was like McGee, or Gibbs, or Tony, or Ziva. It's the mixture of all of them that makes the show--and real-life federal agencies--work so well.

Great episode. Not perfect, but really good stuff in there.
I LOVE the realistic portrayal of the direction in which NCIS--and all federal agencies--are moving. "Our agents should look more like McGee than they do DiNozzo." Computer skills are at a premium everywhere and federal agencies are at the top of that list.
I can't wait to see how this Agent Lee story plays out!

I've been really excited about McGee's character development this season. He's definitely more confident and he's even bested Tony on a few occasions. I have a feeling this is going to be a great season for our Probie!
He probably knew if Tony went, he'd go out searching and asking questions, thus the ending with him asking questions. Well, one. Damn you, Gibbs!
I didn't want to post my opinion on why Gibbs might have left Tony behind because I didn't want to offend any of the Tony fans (again - been there, done that, didn't particularly care for it), but McGee called him "DiNosey" for a reason in a previous episode. Gibbs is a private person and Tony is as curious as a cat. McGee is content to just leave things alone that he doesn't feel are any of his business.
I agree also. On both counts! Gibbs didn't go back to Stillwater to launch an investigation into his own past, but he knew that was going to happen and he tried to minimize it by leaving the one person who WOULD make that the focus of their being there. Yeah, Tony would have investigated the case, but he would have spent at least as much -- if not more -- time investigating Gibbs's past too.
And I also missed Jimmy. But I still gave the episode a 10 and can't wait to watch it a second time!!

The best part about the cupcake subplot was that it could totally happen. Here in DC there have been several cupcake shops that opened up in the past year, and right now in the Washington Post they are having "Cupcake Wars" where they compare the cupcakes from two shops and declare one the winner. They rate size, cost, amount of frosting, taste (of course), even weight. They're on preliminary round 5 of 6 and then it's on to the semifinals. (You gotta love being the cupcake reporter in the midst of all the other nonsense that's going on in DC these days... )
People take their cupcakes VERY seriously around here.
