Junior Gunny can an American give a breakdown of what the numbers down the side mean? I'm guessing this is from his high school yearbook. '66 would be the year he started at this school, but I'm not sure what the "Blue" means; my HS didn't have that designation (didn't he attend a private HS?). The 10, 11, and 12 refer to his year in school--tenth grade, eleventh grade, and twelfth grade (or sophomore, junior, and senior years). Interesting that he didn't do anything notable during his freshman (9th grade) year. Our school year runs from early September to mid-June (or at least they did back in the Dark Ages when he and I were in HS), and most people are 18 (or close to it) when they graduate high school in June. Darla, who doesn't have anywhere near that much stuff listed next to her picture When he entered in 66 that would be 10 th grade, wouldn't it? He was 15 then. And I remember it said somewhere he was in a military school. So the "Blue" might refer to that.

That's possible, bbb. Generally speaking, high schools are 9th through 12th, though more and more frequently now middle schools are 7th through 9th, while high schools are 10th through 12th. My (public) JHS was 7th & 8th, and the HS was 9th-12th.
And yeah, even though MH is just a bit over a year older than I am, where our birthdays fell in the school year of the time would put him two years ahead of me in school. Which would put him in 10th grade for the '66-'67 school year, while I was in 8th. And if his HS was a 10-12 school, that would explain why there are no items from his 9th-grade year on that page.

Got this awhile ago on MHOL site, and since we are talking schools thought I'd post it on here. I knew Mark played Rugby (would love to know what position, the Jonny Wilkinson of his day probably ;D), because he was barred from playing American Football when he swapped school/college(?) during a season, so I'm guessing he was registered with one and could not transfer over to the new team, I think he was also injured and needed to keep fit. So is Pierce a feeder college for more well known colleges, like UCLA? Happy wedding anniversary to Pam and Mark for today, just jogged my memory reading the last bit of that article.

Great find, mchnelson. Poor chap - military school!
Only Mark himself said something about being a very late bloomer. So the girls business might have been a one way street then.

I'm gonna scratch my head in puzzlement over the bit about him graduating in '70.
But on to community/junior/city/two-year colleges (are these an American peculiarity?): These serve two purposes, with one being a place to learn a technical skill or something else that can be done in a span of two or three years. Courses of study in that respect include some cosmetology, law enforcement, and things of that nature. The student will end up with some kind of completion certificate that may or may not be an AA (Associate in Arts) or AS (Associate in Science) degree. They also serve as a starting point for those less-than-stellar students who want a cheap (inexpensive) way to get the basic general education classes (most of what encompasses the first two years at the university level in the US) out of the way before moving on to the more expensive universities. A lackluster performance in high school may be improved upon by a better performance at the community college level, making it easier to get financial aid at the "four-year school." Some students even get not only the general-ed requirements out of the way at the CC level, but also go ahead and get the AA/AS degree in their field of study before moving on to the Bachelor's/Baccalaureate degree at the full college/university level. Pierce is one of these schools. Your Trusty Native Guide and Spewer of Trivia attended Golden West College in Huntington Beach (California). And most of them have dropped the "community/city/junior" part of their names, so that, for example, Fullerton Junior College is now Fullerton College.
Oh yeah: while it's not that way now, and I'm not certain whether Pierce was ever that way, but when I attended GWC straight out of high school we didn't even have any fees; it was completely state-supported with respect to tuition. We only had to buy books and supplies, and occasionally pay a lab fee (depending upon the class), and didn't even have to buy a parking permit. Students from out of state did have to pay tuition.
Darla, hoping this answers your questions ;D

I'm gonna scratch my head in puzzlement over the bit about him graduating in '70. Mystery solved! When I read what Darla said, it triggered a memory about Mark's schooling & I was sure that I'd read that he had repeated a year. I searched & found the article that referred to that. Here is the extract.

Other than NCIS I don't think I have anything of Marks, what a sad excuse of a fan I am.
I love that scene too, that smile... ;D
