Question - how did David McCallum's character on The Great Escape die? I know he was shot, but does anyone remember the circumstances?
The first (and only time I watched) I channel-surfed into this movie just before his character got killed (and turned it off promptly once I saw that happen, not at all impressed with my timing). Now I can't remember what happened. It's supposed to be on again and I'm considering watching at least until he gets killed, but I'd like some warning this time for what to expect:)

it was during his escape. He was on the train when it pulled to a stop at a check point. He got out and tried to hide in the crowd when he realizes it won't do him any good. They spot him and he runs in the opposite direction. they shoot and kill him.

Ashley-Pitt diverted the attention of the soldiers so that the two "bigs" could escape. He sacrificed himself to save them -- and then they made a stupid mistake and got caught anyway.

Right, I think I remember now. Was it his character that the soldiers shot in the back multiple times even after he'd fallen, or was that someone else? I hated that part!

Yes, I think he was shot several times in the back and fell on the train tracks. Saddest part of the whole movie to me.

Off subject, does anyone remember a TV show where DMC did the voice over for the life of Beethoven? It was very moving particularly the scene where he lost his hearing.

I don't remember seeing the TV show, but I saw a publicity picture of this show on ebay a few months ago. The black and white photo had an "abc TV" logo from the '60s on the back, I think, and David was standing at an audio control panel talking to a man and woman casually. It looked like it was taken in the '60s around MFU time. I don't see any mention of this show on his IMDb page though.
I probably couldn't have watched it when it was on in the '60s because where I grew up didn't have a separate ABC affiliate then. Some ABC shows were picked up by our NBC and CBS stations, but not everything. When ABC did get a station, it was an UHF channel, 32, I think, and my parents didn't have a converter for a while .
BTW, kentucky56, are you from KY? I was born and raised in Louisville.

Glad to know that I didn't dream it up. Thanks Always McCallum! Yes, I grew up in western Kentucky and was lucky enough to live in Louisville for 5 years. I love that city, everyone should go to the Kentucky Derby at least once.
