Lily Tomlin Reveals that McGee's Grandmother Is a Nerd!
If you’re an NCIS fan, you already know that iconic funny lady Lily Tomlin will be guest-starring this coming season as McGee’s grandmother. But what you may not know is that Penelope McGee, akin to her kin, is a science nerd.
“She’s a scientist, and she’s very sharp,” Tomlin told TVLine after the Television Critics Association panel for the Showtime series Web Therapy (Tuesdays at 11/10c), on which she guest stars.
Further describing Penelope, Tomlin said, “She was an admiral’s wife for many decades, and she’s the mother of McGee’s father…. It was a really good part, and I was really delighted to get it.”
NCIS showrunner Gary Glasberg told me that Tomlin figures into a “really fun, big, McGee-centric episode,” one that is not just about family but has a procedural aspect as well.
“We’re really happy with her,” he said of the Laugh-In alumna’s casting, “and I hope that maybe we can get her to come back.”
Have McGee and his grandma been close over the years? Or does the procedural aspect of the episode manage to bring together two estranged family members? “They’re a military family, and they’re very science-minded, so they’re not overly emotional,” Tomlin says. “But we have this opportunity [to change that].”
Tomlin hails her TV grandson, Sean Murray, as “so darling, he kills me!” As the events of the episode play out, Tim McGee will experience a “kind of a breakthrough,” she says. “[Penelope] makes a connection with him, and we both come to a new place.

McGee fans (I'm one of them) have been desperate for another good McGee centric episode since his sister was a murder suspect (s4?) Any how I'm looking forward to some more back story on McGee and good episode in general .

In what universe is Lily Tomlin old enough to be McGee's grandmother??!! McGee's got to be in his early to mid thirties by now. I'm 31, and one of my sets of grandparents has passed away already, and the other set is in their 80s. Is Lily Tomlin in her 80s and I somehow missed this fact? And mind you, my grandparents became grandparents fairly young (they were in their mid 20s when they had my dad, and my dad was 24 when I was born). So unless there was some serious Teen Mom going on... I think that the writers were just so excited about the stunt casting that they didn't bother to think about the plausibility of it. I could see her as his mom a lot sooner than grandmother. Then again, Lily Tomlin is always fun, so I will try to shut off my brain and just enjoy it.

In what universe is Lily Tomlin old enough to be McGee's grandmother??!! Tomlin is 72. If she had a baby from 18-20 as did McGee's parents, it's totally doable. Besides, in a world where Nina Foch could play Ducky's mother (9 years between), and every actress around 40 on TV that has teenagers would have been around 15 when she had them (like Lena Hedley & Thomas Dekker in Terminator:TSCC), that difference is on the reality end of the scale. As you said, shut down your brain and enjoy the ride...

The "genetically engineered caterpillar" made me laugh and laugh. Didn't I read about that in The Hunger Games? Anyway, they didn't need to go to the press, they could have just filled his house with popcorn. Dude, Grandma Lily Tomlin wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. She knows someone is targeting her, so she LEAVES a secure building full of armed Federal agents, and hangs out ALONE doing her bonsai. Seriously? Luckily she was smart enough to get him monologuing, so it all worked out in the end. ;D The plot was bafflingly nonsensical, but I loved the team interaction. They are 3-for-3 this season on making me love the team. Also, it makes me wonder what on earth happened between McGee and his dad to make them not speak for 7 years (which is after he joined Team Gibbs if my math is right). So was it Lily Tomlin's face on the mug that Sarah McGee couldn't pee in? ;D

Was a little dissapointed in the epsiode. A few years back there was an episode where McGee was stuck an womensprison, I expected some drama then, but never got it. This time we got some drama, but it didn't But just like celestial said, loved the team on team interaction, writers doing a good job at that so far.

I really enjoyed seeing the team interaction as always and I did like learning more about Mcgee's family and how like with Tony's father, McGee's father also seems to be emotionally unavailable even if in both cases both fathers are proud of theor sons but don't know how to show it very well.

I enjoyed this episode more than Restless. In the back of my mind and after reading the season spoilers I thought they might be turning the series into a soap opera but I have been pleasantly surprised.
My principle thought on this episode is that although we do not know what happened to Gibbs mother he seems to have had a normal relationship with his father, (up until Shannon's funeral) and a loving upbringing unlike his other team members.
The plots seem to be a bit more complicated than in the earlier series when a dead marine often meant they'd been murdered by the wife because of a love affair. Now we have killer caterpillars!
