I like reading the challenges, and if I can find the time, writing them too.

I like the challenges too. (Well, obviously)
According to the first page of this thread, it said at least 500 words. I don't know if there was another standard before that though.

WHOOPS! nope - you're right, meg. it has to be at least 500 words - so anything over 500 is good. i'm taking a writing class and on some of my assignments we are only allowed to use a certain number of words. i think i got the two confused. do you know how hard it is to write a story/article when you're only allowed a certain number of words?! would you guys be interested in doing something like that? setting a word limit? like 500-1500 words? it would be more of a "challenge".

That could be fun. Those are difficult.
My English teacher would assign stories and tell us they had to be a certain length, but that he didn't want them over a certain length. (Just to dissuade little brownnosers who would write 1500 words of meaningless drivel just in an effort to look better.) I came really close to breaking it.
More recently, I entered a script contest with an NCIS script I'd written and I had to cut some stuff, because as I formatted I realized it was too long. And it was hard knowing what to cut.

Someone started a thread on the imdb boards about Sasha's pregnancy and wondered what would have happend had they not killed her off, but written the pregnancy into the show. My first comment to that thread was this: If they had written in the pregnancy it wouldn't have been right. Either they would have had to write in a forced relationship or one night stand with one of the guys on the team, or they would have had to come up with a boyfriend that she'd been with for more than a week. Kate never had a lasting relationship on the show. The most was probably the guy she dated throughout Meat Puzzle. Other than that, she was never shown to have any kind of boyfriend/steady relationship. The only other instance I can think of was in the first episode when she was dating the one guy while still working with the Secret Service. The only other way they could have done it, probably more realisitcally, was to have her be rapped. If that happened then all the guys would have been out for blood. Someone a few posts later said they like the idea (not in a sick way) of Kate being raped then pregnant as a result. SO I got an idea to challange any of the ff writers there. I figured I'd spread the word, see if anyone takes me up on this challange. by - ncisfreak 41 minutes ago (Tue Aug 8 2006 19:13:33 ) UPDATED Tue Aug 8 2006 19:14:01 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i like the (not like in a sick way ) the idea of kate pregnancy being written in as a rape. its interesting and i would have liked to see the teams reation peace out That's the only way I can see her pregnancy being written in and done well. I'd say this calls for a challenge! Any fanfic writers here (aside from myself)? If so I challenge you to write a fic, post season 2 (Ari never shot Kate) where she's raped and gets pregnant. Please no Mary Sues. There's one really bad one on ff.net where a character is raped, gets pregnant, is diabetic (established illness prior to all this) and is a teenager on top of all this. *runs off to post challenge to the special ops boards*

Batwoman, your challenge sounds intriguing. I may have to attempt that, when I catch up on my current fanfic to-do list (which I'm very far behind on at the moment:) )
Just a note of encouragement regarding the monthly challenges we get. Something that I've always found fun is if nothing immediately comes to mind based on the challenge, look at a fanfic you've been wanting to do for a while and see if you can take it anywhere using a set of challenge lines. It settles the difficulty of trying to find yourself an opening line (always the hardest part) and sometimes helps guide you, not to mention give you an interesting complication you didn't see. For example, I knew I wanted to do a character death story, but I also had to use the ending challenge line "How did the skunk get in there," which had me trying to find a plausible person to say the line, how I could apply it to what had happened, and also where "There" would end up being.

Interesting challenge Batwoman. Are there any requirements - length, deadlines etc? Am gonna try and start this now - feeling inspired - so I just wanted to know if there's anything you wanted included.

Nope, nothing other Twilight not happening (basically). This can leave things open to season 3 still happening with Ziva coming on board to Ari being killed, either by her or Gibbs. Just that Kate lives and some time later is raped, can be by anyone.
I personally don't see Ari as a rapist, he's not about control like that.

Gah I feel bad; I haven't written any fanfiction thus far. No, not at all. I haven't been on there for years. Best I should try a Challange. I was contemplating on a NCIS fic. A Gibbs Angst. xD

Please do. I'd love to read it.
PS If anyone wants a printable copy of all the challenge lines we've had to date, please let me know. I've collected them all up and saved them in a file for when I'm looking for inspiration, and also printed a copy to take on vacation. I don't know about anyone else, but I find trying to print stuff off the board without copying it into Word first and then formatting the text to black usually ends up a royal pain in the rear end to read later.

this should have been posted here instead of the updates thread.
Okay, Writers! Since the old Challenge seems to have lost its attraction for you, we're going to try something new using nicole kissman's idea. I will be providing you with words which you will have to use in a story. Just a few rules:
1. You must use all the words. They do not have to used in the order I give them to you.
2. No shipping. [For those unfamiliar with the term, this means no romantic relationships between the team members [Gibbs, Tony, Ziva, Abby, Ducky, McGee, Palmer and/or Kate]. You can have romantic relationships between a team member and a character you've created.]
3. Keep it clean - at least PG13ish. Please read the Posting Guidelines for Fics Thread if you are a new writer.
4. Have fun! Post lots of fics!
5. Challenge words do not have to be bold.
Since I can't find nk's original post with the words she wanted to use for this Challenge - I'll come up with some words this time. Please feel free to PM me with any word ideas you'd like to see used in a future Challenge.

Monkey? o.0
I think I could use the rest but this...
I have a thought, don't know if I could pull it off any time soon. Can't believe how many days/weeks it took me to write my Protectors fic and I cranked that out start to finish, no skipping like I've done with my MFU/Alias fic.

I'm in the process of writing an NCIS fan fic in time for Halloween.
I've always seen fan fic challenges on other forums, but never taken part. This challenge seems like fun. I'm going to incorporate the words into the narrative.
